Johan Steinberg is an artist whose story is as heartfelt as the work he creates. Born in Klerksdorp in 1978, Johan grew up as the youngest and only son in a family rooted in hard work. His father was a mine worker, and his mother devoted her life to nursing. These early experiences shaped Johan’s resilience and deep appreciation for life’s everyday beauty. 

After finishing school in 1996, Johan started working in the security industry. But it wasn’t until he moved to the Western Cape—drawn by the vibrant landscapes and art-rich communities around Paarl and Franschhoek—that his artistic journey began. 

It was here that Johan fell in love with charcoal, captivated by its ability to convey depth, texture, and raw emotion. What started as an exploration quickly turned into a passion. Charcoal became his voice, a way to express the stories and feelings that words couldn’t quite capture. 

Johan’s journey is about more than just making art; it’s about connection. His work invites viewers to slow down, look closely, and feel something real. Every piece carries his sincerity, his curiosity, and his drive to share his perspective with the world.
