Nic De Jesus

Nic De Jesus (b. 1984, South Africa) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work engages in a dialogue with suspended moments—briefly held before they dissolve. His compositions reflect on faint echoes and transient imprints left by his wanderings. Surfaces serve as anchors for exploration, with oil painting evolving through translucent layers and drawing as an act of uncovering forms that feel both familiar and newly discovered. Working on location heightens his awareness, distilling each experience into a direct and immediate response. His photographic practice deepens this inquiry, exploring narrative and sequence while integrating with his painting and drawing.

De Jesus’s creative journey began with ocean sports photography, documenting athletes, their stories, and the environments they navigated. This foundation sparked a broader artistic exploration, further enriched by his travels abroad. During this time, he worked on photographic and film projects while honing his skills in painting and drawing. These experiences inspired the monochromatic aesthetic that defines much of his drawings.

In 2015, his solo exhibition Mare Incognitum: Canto I & II debuted at Gallery 40 in Brighton, UK—a series of drawings that celebrate the sea and sky while confronting the fear of losing them. His ongoing series Cathedral, a collection of oil paintings, explores air as a living presence, uniting the ocean and coastline in a cohesive whole. Since returning to Cape Town in 2017, De Jesus has continued to refine his multidisciplinary practice, layering recollection and experience to uncover meaning in the ephemeral. His works are held in private collections worldwide.
